EASTERN AIR LINES Incorporated Eastern Air Lines Building - 10 Rockefeller Plaza NEW YORK 20 February 23, 1945 441st. AAFBU Box 117 Metropolitan Airport Van Nuys, Califronia My dear Lt. Lentz: I note what you say in yours of February 12 with reference to the authority to wear the "Hat-in-the-Ring" insignia of the old 94th. Some time ago I had a letter from General Arnold which I will try to look up and if I can find it, I will send you a copy. He stated definitely that the "Hat-in-the-Ring" would again be authorized, or had been authorized, by the proper persons as the official insignia of the 94th. Squadron. Then before leaving for Africa, I discussed the matter of the little silver "Hat-in-the-Ring" insignias with General Arnold and told him I was taking enough with me for each member of the Squadron. He stated, frankly, that it was official to wear the "Hat-in-the-Ring" insignia above the wings on the tunic and that I should, by all means, present them to the boys when I got there. This matter was further discussed with General Spaatz on arrival and he received information from Headquarters to that effect. This was the reason, when some of the boys asked whether you could wear it and whether it was official, he stated to you, frankly, "I am wearing it and I know it is official and authorized." In the meantime, I hope nothing has taken place to cause the boys to take it off their tunics. If such becomes the case, I would likevery much to know it and should you hear of any such refusal, I will then take the matter up with General Arnold again and get him to send out an official notice supplementing that which he sent me. However, I do not wish to do it unless it becomes a necessity. Yes, I too, am proud of the "Hat-in-the-Ring" pin and the insignia. I am glad to hear that all of the boys of the new 94th. feel the same as I do. Kindest regards and best wishes.
